MFTA and Asian American Arts Alliance celebrate Lunar New Year
Materials for the Arts (MFTA) is New York City's largest creative reuse center, putting valuable materials – that would otherwise go to waste – in the hands of arts professionals, educators, students and everyday New Yorkers that visit its imaginative LIC space. Join MFTA and the Asian American Arts Alliance on February 16 for an artist-led mask making workshop. Attendees will have access to MFTA's reused materials. Attendance is free. Specialized LIC Lunar New Year Group Ride
Join Specialized for an all-ages no-drop group ride to celebrate Lunar New Year. Participants are encouraged to wear red (the lucky color for the holiday). Court 16 Celebrates Lunar New Year
Court 16 invites individuals and families to celebrate Lunar New Year at its popular LIC location. Guests are invited to play on their pickleball courts and enjoy a special arts & crafts activity for children, who will each receive a special gift in a red envelope. $25 per person, or $35 per family (max 4/family). Lunar New Year Bingo at Big aLICe
Big aLICe Brewing, which celebrates its tenth anniversary in LIC, will host Lunar New Year Bingo Night on Saturday, February 4 at 4 p.m. The winners will receive free beer (obviously).
Studio 41 Spring Renewal Pop Up and Lantern Making Workshop
Studio 41, an artist collective, celebrates Lunar New Year, the spirit of “renewal” and the coming spring season with a special two-day weekend pop-up. Visitors are welcome to visit the studio on February 4th & 5th from 1-5 p.m. to see new works by members and from several guest artists and makers. All participating artists either live or work in western Queens. The studio will host two paper lantern-making workshops for children aged 6-12 on Saturday, February 4, 2-3:30 p.m. and 3:30-5 p.m. Pre-registration is required; please email the participant’s name and telephone number to studio41collective@gmail.com by February 1. Space is limited.
Open Studio at The Noguchi Museum
Families with children ages 2–11 are invited to explore artworks by Isamu Noguchi in the galleries and participate in art-making activities inspired by Lunar New Year in the lower-level education studio. No registration is required for this drop-in program.
Lunar New Year Comedy Show at The Local
The Local NY is an international hostel and performance space in Long Island City that has hosted guests from around the world, along with local artists, musicians, and comedians since 2014. The Local will host the best up-and-coming Asian comedians at 8 p.m. on February 3 as part of the Lunar New Year celebration. The event is free and open to the public. No RSVP is required. Lunar NY Crafts for Kids
LIC Girl Scout Troop #4731, which is comprised of high school juniors and seniors, will host a Lunar New Year-themed arts & craft afternoon for families with children in K-8th grade. There will be arts and crafts stations for kids, along with a bake sale. The event is free, but donations are welcome and will be used towards the Girl Scout Gold Awards, a project organized by the troop that recognizes their efforts in the community. Kids in kindergarten through fifth grade must be accompanied by an adult. Children in sixth through eighth grade are welcome to be dropped off or attend the event on their own.
Sunnyside Lunar New Year Lion Dance and Celebration
Sunnyside Shines BID holds a Lion Dance and brief program to celebrate Lunar New Year in Sunnyside. The dance starts in Lowery Plaza at 40th Street at Queens Boulevard, under the 7 train, followed by a march to Bliss Plaza at 46th Street at Queens Boulevard, and dancing and program at the Sunnyside Arch.
Lunar New Year Zodiac Animal Movement Workshop
To celebrate the Year of the Rabbit, Long Island City School of Ballet presents a Zodiac Animal Dance Movement Workshop for children three to seven years old. Children will fly like a dragon and hop like a rabbit as they imagine how animals might move to music. Register at info@licsb.com. Space is limited. Jade Rabbit Lunar New Year Themed Beer Release
Fifth Hammer Brewing debuts the Jade Rabbit, a special taproom-only yuzu lager honoring Lunar New Year and the Year of the Rabbit. In addition to the limited-time beverage, find up to 15 other beers on draft, as well as a selection of specialty bottles, ciders, wine, and non-alcoholic beers.
A Guide to Comic Collecting and the Market
Everyone Comics hosts a seminar on comic book collecting with special guest buyer and comics personality, Serge Zenteno. Learn why and how comic books accrue value, how grading works, how to become a collector and how to look for the books germane to a collection. All attendees will be given a bag of collectible comics to start their collection.
A Healthy Balance Between Work and Hobbies with the Nerd Therapist
Join Everyone Comics and Collectibles for a talk with New York City's Nerd Therapist, Yoni Sobin, who will discuss how hobby enthusiasts can stay balanced. Passionate fans of comics, video games and trading cards may often find that their passion can interfere with personal or professional life. Similarly, an excess of work can interfere with mental health and emotional health, and take away from time to explore passions, which foster happiness and well-being.
There will be time in the end for questions and for the audience to discuss their own experiences. Soft drinks and alcoholic beverages will be served.

Film Screening: "A New Old Play" by Qiu Jiongjiong
As part of its Curators' Choice series, which features some of the best films of 2022, MoMI presents Chinese artist Qiu Joing Jiong's hand-crafted masterwork. The story of 20th-century China from the collapse of the Qing dynasty through Mao’s Cultural Revolution is recalled through the remembrances of an old thespian on the road to the afterlife. Free Cup of Rice Cake Soup on January 22
Little Banchan Shop will give out a free cup of traditional rice cake soup to the first 100 visitors on January 22 from 11:00 am until we run out (limit one per person). Rice cake soup or 'tteokguk' is a traditional Korean dish made of disc-shaped rice cakes, beef brisket, scallions, egg and thin strips of dried seaweed (gim), in a clean anchovy broth. It is traditionally eaten on Lunar New Year day.
Lunar New Year Open Studio
Art Strong will host a Lunar New Year themed Open Studio on Sunday January 22. Families with children ages 2-9 years old are welcome to stop by anytime between 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. During Open Studio there will be five Lunar New Year themed sensory activities and art making stations to explore with your child. This is not a drop off event and one parent is required to attend per child. Space is limited and pre-registration is required.

Little Chef Little Cafe will give out a free Lunar New Year themed cookie with all purchases and orders made on Sunday, January 22 and Monday, January 23.
Celebrate the Year of the Rabbit with The Cliffs at LIC
Find lucky red envelopes hidden throughout the gym, each with exciting surprises inside ranging from free merchandise to discounts to one free month of membership. The Cliffs at LIC will also offer rock climbing for all levels and ages. Found lucky red envelopes may be redeemed at the front desk.

Dance Performances for Lunar New Year
Queensboro Dance Festival presents Queens-based dance performances in celebration of the Year of the Rabbit! As part of CultureLab's lineup of activities and music, see traditional and contemporary Chinese dance performances at 4:45 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. for the whole family to enjoy.
Lunar New Year Celebration at Culture Lab LIC
Join Culture Lab on Saturday afternoon for traditional Chinese music, snacks and games. We will be projecting the events of the New Year live throughout the event.
At 9 p.m. there will be a free concert by Cyber East, a collaboration of artists Sashenka and ADÀI. Sashenka is an indie musician with a futuristic vision, whose diverse musical style blends electronic, synth wave and synthpop with Chinese vocals and niche electronic music. ADÀI is an electro pop producer, DJ, singer, songwriter who splits time between NYC and Beijing.
Admission to the event is offered free to the community but must show proof of RSVP. Space is limited.
